Avoid Delays

Avoid These Problems With Translated Evidence Before Your Hearing

Translated court documents are rarely turned away because of bad language. They are turned away because a statement is missing, pages do not match the bundle, or something was left out. These are the problems we see most often, and all of them are easy to avoid.

✕

Missing Statement of Accuracy

Without the translator's signed statement confirming the translation is accurate, a court may not rely on it as evidence.

✕

Summary Instead of Full Text

Courts need every word. A summary or part translation of a statement or order can be challenged by the other side.

✕

Page Numbers Do Not Match

If paragraph and page numbers differ from the original, the judge and lawyers cannot find the passage being discussed.

✕

Names Spelt Differently

One name spelt two ways across your bundle can confuse the court and raise questions about which person is meant.

✕

Untranslated Stamps & Handwriting

Court stamps, seals, signatures and handwritten notes are part of the record and need translating too.

✕

Translation Arrives Too Late

Evidence filed late may be left out, or the hearing may be put back. Ordering early leaves time for checking.

Why These Mistakes Matter

Judges, clerks and the other side's lawyers read translated evidence closely. If something is missing or does not match, the evidence can be challenged, left out or sent back, sometimes days before a hearing.

What Affects Your Final Price
✓ Number of pages — A two-page order costs less than a long witness statement or a 100-page bundle.
✓ Language — Common languages such as Polish or French cost less than rarer languages with fewer specialist translators.
✓ Type of document — Legal terms, handwriting, tables and poor-quality scans take more time than a clear, printed page.
✓ Your hearing date — Standard delivery is the lowest price. Express and same-day delivery cost more because your papers go to the front of the queue.
✓ Extra certification — Notarisation, a sworn translation or an apostille are added only if a foreign court or authority asks for them.
✓ Hard copies by post — Your translation comes as a PDF by email. Signed printed copies for the court are a small extra, only if you need them.

For example, a two-page divorce decree on standard delivery will usually stay close to the starting price. A 40-page evidence bundle needed for a hearing tomorrow will cost more. Either way, your quote shows the full amount, including VAT, before you pay anything.

FAQs

Before You Order: Questions About Translating Evidence for Court

The doubts people most often have before sending us documents for a court case.

An independent professional translator with no link to the case. You, a family member or a friend should not translate your own evidence, even if you speak both languages well, because the court needs the translation to be impartial.

For UK courts and tribunals, a certified translation with a signed statement of accuracy is normally enough. A notarised translation is usually only needed for a foreign court, and a sworn translation only when a country such as France or Spain asks for one.

A translation covers written documents only. If you need help understanding what is said in the courtroom, speak to the court or your solicitor, as the court usually arranges interpreters for hearings.

Usually the person who wants to rely on the document pays for its translation. In some cases the cost can be recovered at the end of the case or covered by legal aid, so ask your solicitor if that applies to you.

Sometimes a court will accept an extract, but the other side may ask to see the full document. Translating the whole document is usually safer and avoids delays later on.

As soon as you know which documents you will use. Court directions often set a date for sharing evidence with the other side, which may be weeks before the hearing itself.

Yes, they can question its accuracy. Because every translation we deliver carries the translator's signed statement and contact details, it can be checked, and we will answer any questions about it.
